The idea in plain English
Most of the annoying parts of running a life aren’t hard. They’re just tedious. Adding up what you actually spent on groceries. Figuring out whether the flight with the layover is worth saving eighty dollars. Deciding what to cook when the kid has practice at 5:30 and there’s half a rotisserie chicken in the fridge.
These tasks all share a shape: you have some scattered information, and you need someone to organize it and hand you a recommendation. That’s exactly what a chatbot like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini is good at. You dump in the messy details, tell it what decision you’re trying to make, and it does the sorting.
Notice what that is not. It’s not a financial advisor. It’s not a booking site. It won’t know today’s airfare or your actual account balance. Think of it as a very patient friend who’s good with spreadsheets and has read a lot about travel — helpful for thinking, not for facts about your specific accounts or live prices. You bring the numbers; it brings the structure.
How it actually works
Three things make the difference between a useless answer and one you’ll actually use.
You have to give it your real details. “How do I save money?” gets you a listicle you could have written yourself. “We’re a family of four in Ohio, take-home is $5,400 a month, rent is $1,650, and we somehow have nothing left by the 25th” gets you something specific. The AI is only as useful as the information you hand it.
You have to say what kind of answer you want. Left alone, chatbots produce essays. If you want a table, ask for a table. If you want three options ranked with a one-line reason each, say that. If you want it to ask you questions before answering, say that too — this one is underused and it’s excellent. “Ask me five questions before you make a plan” turns a generic response into a tailored one.
You have to decide what stays out. This is the finances part people get wrong. Never type in account numbers, card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords, or logins. You don’t need to. For a budget, the AI needs amounts and categories — not where the money is kept. Instead of “my Chase checking account ending 4471 has $2,310,” just write “checking: $2,310.” Same usefulness, none of the risk. Assume anything you type could be reviewed by a human at the company, and write accordingly.
One more habit: check anything that has a number and a consequence. AI tools are confidently wrong about specifics. Visa requirements, baggage fees, whether a museum is open Mondays, current interest rates — those get verified on the actual source. Perplexity is a decent choice here because it shows links to where it got each claim. Use AI to build the plan, then spot-check the handful of facts the plan depends on.

What else?” or “Show me what happens to the credit card if I pay $250 a month versus $400.” Treat it as a conversation, not a vending machine.

Once you’ve picked a destination, check the real prices on Google Flights or the hotel’s own site, and confirm anything time-sensitive — passport requirements if you’re leaving the country, whether that attraction is open the day you’re going. The AI’s numbers are estimates from its training, not today’s prices.
- Ask it to make you the boring thing. Now that it has all the context, add: “Write me a packing list for this trip for all four of us, accounting for the weather there in late June.” Or for the family side: “Give me a five-night dinner plan using chicken, rice, broccoli, and eggs, with a grocery list, nothing taking more than 30 minutes.” This is the highest-value, lowest-glamour use of AI there is.
Common mistakes
- Pasting in account numbers or logins. There’s no reason to. The AI needs the amount, not the location. Strip anything that identifies an account before you hit enter, and never share a password with a chatbot for any reason.
- Trusting a price, a fee, or a date without checking. AI will tell you a flight to Lisbon runs $680 in October with total confidence, and it may be badly out of date. Any number that costs you money or determines whether you get on the plane gets verified on the actual site.
- Asking questions so vague the answer is useless. “How can I save money?” and “Where should we go on vacation?” produce filler. The fix is embarrassingly simple: add your actual numbers, your actual constraints, your actual family. Ten extra seconds of typing changes the whole output.
- Treating the first answer as the answer. Beginners read the response, decide it doesn’t quite fit, and close the tab. The first answer is a draft. Tell it what’s wrong — “we don’t have a car,” “my mother-in-law is coming,” “that’s over budget” — and let it try again. Three rounds beats one.
- Mistaking it for a professional. For a household budget or a trip itinerary, AI is genuinely useful. For a tax question, a divorce, whether to refinance, or how to invest a retirement account, it’s a starting point for understanding the vocabulary — then you talk to a human who’s accountable for the advice.
